DIY greeting cards are always more memorable than store-bought cards. We can all agree that whenever we receive a card with custom design and message from someone, we always feel so special.
Not to mention that we will be amazed by their effort and talent. However, it could be tough to come up with a fresh greeting card ideas.
If you're anything like us, one of our favorite kinds of greeting card is one that has a hidden message. It makes reading the card a little bit like a game, and encourages the recipient to interact more with the card.
In this tutorial, our tool of choice is Assemblr. This app could augment any 3D visuals to your greeting card virtually, using a technology called augmented reality.
The image will be shown once you hover your phone camera to the card. Cool, right? It's a lot like pop-up cards, but with a digital twist!
Fortunately, it's really easy to make and only requires a basic design skill. Without further ado, here's how to make an augmented reality greeting card in 5 steps.
1. Create your 3D
To start creating this card, make sure you have Assemblr installed in your phone. After you got the app and signed in, you can begin creating your 3D by tapping the 'plus' (+) button on the bottom right corner of the screen.
In the worksheet, you are able to create a 3D image using the app's premade building blocks. This includes a set of geometric shapes as well as hundreds of predefined items in the app's library.
For a step-by-step guide on how to use the tools, you can learn more in our tutorial page. In this example, we created a bucketful of hearts and a couple of rabbits using only geometric blocks!
2. Create your marker
After you're done with your 3D, tap on the menu (the three-striped icon on the top left corner of the screen) and tap Generate Marker. You will have the option to get either QR-like marker or a marker with project preview.
Pro tip: If you want the 3D image to be hidden, choose the former!
Now you have your marker saved in your gallery. For our next step, you could send this marker to your PC using e-mail or a file-sharing drive.
3. Design your special card
After downloading the marker in your PC, it's time to design your card! Open your favorite image editing software and create your design. It could be simple and doesn't have to be exquisite.
Then insert the marker into your design. You might also want to give a hint that people could scan the marker to reveal something.
4. Print the card
The key to any good DIY and unique greeting card is the paper you use. It needs to be somewhat thick and substantial; card stock is ideal.
We'd also recommend a sheet of paper with a matte finish instead of a glossy one, as light reflection on marker might make it trickier to scan.
5. Scan the marker
To reveal the your virtual greeting card, open Assemblr home and go to our Scan menu. Then, hover your camera to your card. Surprise! The 3D image will pop up.
